Since moving to Santa Barbara in theSummer of 1969, only a few things havechanged. The most significant being thatthe freeway traffic lights were finallyremoved and the waterfront was given afacelift with palms, parks and hotels.The Painted Cave Fire of 1990 burned fromthe top of the mountain all the way to thesea. It destroyed clusters of cozy woodenneighborhoods that were rebuilt into up-scale stucco and tile. Many of the storeson the main street continually change theirappearance; some for a new purpose andsome for the sake of a face lift.
