CHRIS ROWTHORN: Born in England and raised in the United States, Chris has lived in Kyoto since 1992. Soon after his arrival in Kyoto, Chris beganstudying the Jap-anese language and culture, while sup-porting himself by teaching English and working as an editor. In 1995 he became a regional correspond-ent for the Japan Times, a national English-language newspaper published in Tokyo.Chris joined Lonely Planet in 1996 and has worked on a total of 17 Lonely Planet travel guides, including Japan, Hiking in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto and Read This First:
Asia & India. Despite all of his work-related travel, Chris still takes every opportunity to explore the world, in particular the Hima-layas and Southeast Asia.
