Ireland (Eire) is Europe's third largest island, lying between the Ilrish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean about 50 miles off the western shores of Britain. Politically, it is divided into the Republic of Ireland, which covers the south, east, west andnorthwest, and Northern Ireland, the northeast part of the island, which is a state within the United Kingdom. Dublin and Belfast are their respective capitals.
Not for nothing is Ireland known as the 'Emerald Isle'. Its mild,maritime climate and all-too-frequent gentle rainfall (heaviest in the west) produce lush green vegetation all over the island.Within the mountains that girdle nmch of the coastline lie low,central plains, bisected from north to south by the great River Shannon and its tributaries that form a huge network of navigable inland waterways. |
