FOREWORD This book was written as an historical guide for per- sons who float or hike down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Of necessity its scope has been limited to sites and events close to the river. Significant new information and more than seventy additional photographs have been added to this edition. While not intended as a guide for getting down the river， the Forest Service chart with information on river rapids has been included as a convenience for some read- ers. Our hope is that by providing this history we may contribute in a small way to the preservation of the past and thereby fulfill a responsibility to the future. Please refrain from removing any article or artifact from sites in the canyon. What may be only a souvenir to you might be of great interest to the next party.
