James Edward Oglethorpe, distinguished soldier and prison reformer at age 30, was urging King George I1 to sign a charter for a new colony where people \"of decayed circumstances\" could begin a fresh life. The colony would be called \"Georgia\" in honor of the king. Oglethorpe had three strong arguments: the prospect of prof- its from raw materials; protection for South Carolina from the Spaniards to the south; and asylum for men and women fleeing religious persecution. Ink flowed from the nwal pen on April 21, 1732, as King George lowered his bewigged head to sign the charter for the 13th and last British colony in America. \"Non sibi sed aliis\" (Not for self, but for others) was the Latin motto chosen by Oglethorpe and the twenty other men \"~o agreed to serve as \"Dustees fi)r ( ;eorgia.
