Nevertheless, as the saying goes, "Weknow the territory." If you re looking for mistakes, well, we re sure you ll find a fewauthentic Boners (as well as a couple of bad puns). This is theeleventh edition of the first book in a series of guides to Pacific partsof the world. (The others are The Maverick Guide to New Zealand and TheMaverick Guide to Australia.) For this reason, we would like your help. Incidentally,we try very hard to answer every letter that we receive. Let it not be said here that you cannot visit Hawaii without aguidebook. Lots of people do. There are plenty of guided tours thatbegin by strapping you in on the Mainland and that don t let you offthe leash again until you re back home. And there are other visitorswho say they do not intend to leave the beach (ouch!) for the entirelength of their sun-drenched vacation. There are also many hotel desk clerks and tour guides to direct youto places in which they or their companies have financial interests. Youcan get along with these recommendations--in the same way that anautomobile that is designed to run more smoothly on low-cost regulargasoline gets along only jerkily when it is fed expensive, high-testfuel instead. But we want to keep you rolling smoothly and economically, while atthe same time gently guiding you along adventuresome beaches andbyways.
