i have used brualdi in the past with great success. brualdi's text is comprehensive. it covers plenty of material for a year course, thus considerably more than we can cover in our one-semester course. brualdi has a good style, mathematically precise without being over the students' heads. he lightens the presentation with easily understood examples and jokes a bit with the reader in a very natural way. i hope this appeals to students; it should. . i currently use brualdi for a number of reasons, it is one of a few books that focus much more attention on enumerative combinatorics than on graph theory (the two main areas of discrete mathematics/combinatorics). upon learning of the text, the above aspect pleased me greatly, as the course i teach deals only with enumerative combinatorics, leaving graph theory for another course. brualdi's book contains a large quantity of combinatorial information; it is not "skimpy" when it comes to content. ...
