    From Publishers Weekly
In Lindsay's third novel to feature endearing Miami cop and serial killer Dexter Morgan (after 2005's Darkly Devoted Dexter), the Dark Passenger, the voice inside Dexter's head that from time to time drives him to the Theme Park of the Unthinkable, inexplicably disappears while Morgan is investigating a gruesome double murder on the University of Miami campus. The crime scene, at which two co-eds were ritualistically burned and beheaded, gives even the human vivisection–loving vigilante the creeps. As the burned and beheaded body count continues to mount, Morgan realizes that the force behind the killings is something even more evil than his Dark Passenger. Though the macabre wit that powered the first two installments of this delightfully dark series (also a hit on TV's Showtime) is still evident, this third entry takes a decidedly deep introspective turn as Dexter is forced to contemplate not only life without his enigmatic companion but also who—or what—he truly is. Jeff Lindsay has created a fascinating antihero in Dexter, now the star of a popular Showtime television series. Critics were relieved to find that Dexter’s small-screen success has had no effect on Lindsay’s fast-paced plotting, absorbing characters, and delicious black humor. Dexter in the Dark, the third in the series, is longer than its predecessors, which allows Lindsay to delve deeper into Dexter’s psyche. Some critics were pleased, while others felt that Dexter’s longwinded self-analyses detracted from the storyline. According to the Denver Post, "readers who have not yet met Dexter can enjoy reading the latest without starting at the beginning." Returning admirers of this original, offbeat series will be happy to know that a fourth installment is in the works.

*Starred Review* It's tempting to say the Dexter series keeps getting weirder, but how can a series about a serial killer who works as a blood-splatter expert for the Miami police department get any weirder? In case you've never met him (or watched the television series based on the character), Dexter Morgan, one of the most original and complex protagonists in recent years, is a bright, likable fellow with one flaw: he's a monster. True, he only kills people who deserve it—killers who have escaped justice—but make no mistake, he enjoys what he does, and he does it very well. In this third installment in the series, Dexter is shocked, while working a crime scene, to discover that his Dark Passenger, the evil thing that makes him who he is, has abruptly vanished. Soon after that, and still reeling from the unfamiliar sense of solitude, he learns that he's being stalked by someone more evil than anyone he's encountered in the past. Can Dexter, the psychopath who looks like an ordinary man, survive without his faithful companion? This novel explores new facets of Dexter's multifaceted personality and plumbs new dramatic depths (while never losing the sharp-witted humor that makes the series so perversely enjoyable). For fans of Lindsay's one-of-a-kind creation, it's a must-read. Pitt, David --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

    Review

Killer Acclaim for Jeff Lindsay’s DEXTER Novels:

“It’s like very little else you’ve read. Imagine if Hannibal Lecter starred in CSI: Miami, and you’re halfway there.”
    Time

“Maybe the first serial killer who unabashedly solicits our love.”
    Entertainment Weekly

“The real appeal of this macabre tour-de-force is Dexter’s sardonic voice, so snappy and smart, and yet so full of self-loathing that we hate ourselves for laughing.”
    New York Times

“ . . . fascinating, entertaining, and brilliant. Let Jeff Lindsay introduce you to the serial killer next door—Dexter (and his Dark Passenger) are the freshest, most terrifying creations you are ever likely to meet . . . and live to tell about.”
—Robert Crais, New York Times bestselling author

“Totally captivating . . . totally original. The characters are beautifully drawn, particularly Dexter, who is tremendously likable, his hobby notwithstanding.”
    St. Petersburg Times

    Review
    “Lindsay's bad boy is back.”
—Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review

“Wonderful. . . . Darkly amusing. . . . Our handsome murderer may consider himself emotionless, but his sheer joie de vivre – or joie de mourir – is both obvious and contagious.”
    The Boston Globe

“[Dexter's] adrenaline-pumping gore factor is balanced with large doses of hilarious black humor. Any writer who can make his readers love a serial kill must be doing something right.”
    USA Today

“An entertaining, funny series that draws us in and makes us root, almost against our will, for a ruthless, yet appealing killer. In his own way, Dexter is trying to make the world a better place.”
    The South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Dexter Morgan is busy planning his wedding to Rita to complete his nice-guy disguise. Soon it seems the dark passenger in Dexter's head has gone into hiding. And when something creeps out your friendly neighbourhood serial killer, you know it's serious . . . As Halpern and Dexter are stalked by death, it looks like it's getting personal - especially as Dex now has a family to protect. Gradually, Dexter realises his stepchildren might share his extracurricular interest in death. Could he help them target their bloodlust, just as he steers his own? But to do that, Dex must cope with a certain mutilated sergeant from his past, and more importantly . . . stay alive . . . --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
