| The Eastern Shore or Delmarva is a long peninsula lying between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Stretching from Cecil and New; Castle counties in the north, the region follows the Chesapeake Bay southl~ to form a diamond of tidewater counties shaped over the millennia by the sand deposits of the Susquehanna River. Three states, Delaware, Mary.land, and Virginia, have sovereignty on the Eastern Shore, and the nameDelmarva (as the region is popularly referred to) testifies to the socialallegiance of its inhabitants. Until recently the Eastern Shore was isolated from the commercialand metropolitan mainstream of Washington, Baltimore, and Wilmington,Lack of good roads in predominantly rural Delaware prevented commer-cial penetration of the region. The Chesapeake Bay also isolated Mary-.land s Eastern Shore population, until the construction of the William Pres-ton Lane Bridge from Annapolis to Kent Island in 1952. The inhabitants ofVirginia s Eastern Shore s tightly knit i farming community with their timehonored ways and local customs often frustrate the cosmopolitan govern, iment of Richmond. On Delmarva look to the water. It is a region defined by the Chesa-peake Bay and numerous exquisitely beautiful tidal rivers. Its creeks and isnug harbors have provided a livelihood for Chesapeake oystermen andfisher folk since the days of Captain John Smith in the seventeenth cen-tury. The region today is a sailor s delight, and cyclists on the EasternShore will see watercraft as diverse as giant oil tankers and ChesapeakeBay skipjacks (oyster-dredging sail boats built over a hundred years ago). Most of Delmarva is flat coastal plain, making cycling on the peninsulaan easy ride. South of the Choptank River in Maryland, the countryside isas flat as a pancake. The northern part of the Delmarva Peninsula consistsof flat stretches interspersed with gently rolling hills. The most significantobstacle to cyclists on the Eastern Shore is variable winds, especially thoseout of the south, which can be especially frustrating to the inexperiencedcyclist. |
