IndicationsandContraindications
ofAcupressureTherapy
A.Indications
1.Diseasesofthenervoussystem:Sequelaeofcerebralbirthinjuryandbrain
diseases,trauma,partialparalysiscausedbyinjuryofthespinalcolumn,sequelaeof
poliomyelitis,multipleneuritis,arachnoidaladhesion,cerebralparalysis,facialpara-
lysis,partialparalysisofplexusbrachialisnerve,partialinjuryofnervousmedians,
nervusulnaris,nervusradialis,sciaticnerveandnervusperoneuscommunis.
2.Diseasesofthespine:Cervicalvertebralsyndromes,stiffneck,torticollis,
disorderofposteriorlumbarjoints,herniationofthethirdlumbarbonesyndromes,
herniationofthelumbarintervertebraldisc,derangementofintervertebralarticula-
tion.
3.Diseasesofthejointsofthearmsandlegs.
4.Othersymptoms:headache,toothache,hiccup,infantileindigestion,common
cold,bed-wetting,hypochondriasis,drooling,footandwristptosis.
B.Contraindications
Thefollowingconditionsshouldnotbetreatedwithacupressuretherapy.
1.Acutediseases,infectiousdiseases,acutestomachache,suppurativearthritis.
2.Severeheartdiseases,tuberculosis,malignanttumors.
3.Hemorrhagicdiseasessuchashemophiliaandpurpura.
4.Severeskindiseases.
SectionVI
PreparationsPriortoTreatment
Priortotreatment,besidespreparingthecasehistory,makingnecessaryphysical
andlaboratoryexaminationsandgivingacorrectdiagnosis,thedoctorshouldindicate
tothepatienttherelativelylongprocessoftreatmentandtheprospectsforrecovery
soastoenhancehisunderstanding,patienceandconfidenceandwinhisco-operation
inthecourseoftreatment.
Theclinicroomshouldbespacious,wellventilatedandilluminated.Theexami-
nationtableshouldbeadjustedtoanappropriateheight.Necessaryinstruments
includingstethoscope,anglesquare,percussionhammer,tapemeasure,otoscope,
ophthalmoscope,sphygmomanometre,tuningfork,andelectrictorchshouldbelaid
out.
Themanipulatorsshouldfrequentlytrimfingernailsbutwithoutoverdoingit,so
asnottohurtthefinger-tipsornailgrooves,whichcanbeprotectedbyadhesiveplaster
ifnecessary.
SectionVII
PointsofAttentioninClinicalPractice
1.OnthebasisofcasehistoryandlabreportssuchasEMGs,cardiograms.
somatosensoryevokedpotentialcharts,makeanoverallanalysisoftheillnessandthe
patient'sconditionbeforedecidingontheacupointsandstimulation-linesforeach
individualpatient.Thisisespeciallyimportantinthefollowingcases:debilitated
children,starvingoroverfedpeople,patientsontheirfirstvisitandwomenduring
menstruation.Thetherapyshouldnotbepractisedonpatientsundertheinfluenceof
liquororinastateofphysicalexhaustion.Deformitiesshouldbetreatedwithgreat
patience.
2.Startthemanipulationslightly,graduailyincreaseinintensityandwindupwith
lightmovements.Specialcareshouldbetakentoavoidinjuringjointcapsules.tendons
andbones.
3.Thepatientsusuallyhavesuchsensationsassoreness,numbness,warmth,spasm
anddistensionintheareaofmanipulation.Skinflushmayoccur;sometimesthe
patientsmaysweatorexperiencefever.Subcutaneousbleedingmayoccurinthe
beginning,butwillgraduaUydisappearinaweek.Noneofthesereactionsrequireany
specialtreatment.
Incaseofseverereactionssuchasdizziness,nausea,vomiting,lossofcolouror
shock,themanipulationshouldbestoppedandrelaxationtechniquesappliedimme-
diately,suchasclappingthepatientonthehead,backorshoulders,pressingBigeand
Yongquan(KI1),pokingthefingerandtoeradixesquickly,andmassagingthe
trigonumlumbaleandabdominalwalls.
Withsomepatients,symptomsmaybeaggravatedafterinitialtreatmentwith
acupressuretherapy,buttheaggravationwillfinallydisappearinthreetofivedays.
4.Frequencyanddurationoftreatment.Themanipulationisusuallyperformed
onceadayoreveryotherday,dependingonthereactionofthepatient.Formildcases,
acourseoftreatmentusuallylaststendays;forchroniccases,itlastsonetotwo
months.
Ifthecurativeeffectisslow,itisadvisabletodiscontinuetreatmentfortwoor
threeweeksbeforeitisresumed.

HegraduatedfromtheMedicalCollege
ofNationalLanzhouUniversityin1951,
obtainedhismasterdegreeattheFirst
MoscowMedicalCollegein1953and
doctoranddegreein1956.Havingasolid
medicalfoundationandin-depth
understandingoforthopedictheory,he
stressesclinicalpracticeandresearches
intractablediseasesusingmodemscientific
methodsundertheguidanceofTCM
theory.Heisparticularlyskilledinclinical
andtheoreticaltechniquesusedtotreat
rheumaticarthritis.From1983to1990,he
devotedallhiseffortstothestudyof
acupressuretherapy.Thesecasestudies
providedthebasisforfurtherresearch.
HehasbeeninvitedbytheJapanese
AssociationofMassageand
Acu-moxibustionPractitionersand
Australian-ChineseFriendshipAssociation
todeliverlecturesonacupressureinJapan
andAustralia,contributingtothe
intemationalizationofTCM.
