| Human bodies as well as ideas and perceptions about those bodies areprofoundly influenced by their social and political contexts. To convey thecomplex interrelationships of body, mind, and society in producing healthand illness, we have selected key themes in the sociology of health andillness, rather than writing a comprehensive text. While we describe variousinterpretive approaches and review much conventional literature in severalrelated disciplines, our primary aim is to present a critical, holistic interpre-tation that emphasizes power as a key social-structural factor in health and insocietal responses to illness. |
