EpicurusA number of years ago, a theater arts student taking my moral philosophy course as a general ed-ucation elective raised his hand in class, tie was obviously very. agitated and upset. YVe hadbeen discussing the ethics of abortion that day when he suddenly blurted out: "C mon ToW,you ve been studying this ethics stuff" for years. You re the expert. Let s stop all of this argoing.It s driving me crazy. Just tell me, will you, is abortion right or wrong?" Ks I think back to the painful experience of my theater arts student, I cannot help but becomea little disturbed myself by the mental tortuent he was suffering. He was, apparently, experiencingconsiderable anxiety in his efforts to make the correct moral value judgment on the controver-sial issue of abortion. He knew that abortion was a serious matter and that it was important forhim to take the right moral position on it; yet, he was uncertain about how to decide for him-self. He wanted me to decide for him.Pbilosbphy does not give, it can only awaken.
