PREFACE
This biography was written on the invitation of， and with the
support of， Mrs John Strachey， who kindly made available to me
all papers kept by her late husband. Mrs Strachey has also， as the
text makes dear， gone to great lengths to help me in writing the
book. So have many friends and relations of John Strachey and
I am most grateful to them for their help， encouragement and，
often， hospitality. In particular， I am grateful to John Strachey s
sister， AmabelWilliams-Ellis， for her generous help. Both Mrs
Strachey and Lady Williams-Ellis kindly read the book in type-
