作者简介: ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON(1850-1894)was born into a successful engineering family in Edinburgh,Scotland.Although he entered Edinburgh University to study engineering,he spent most of his time teaching himself to write in different styles.By 1871,Stevenson had decided to devote himself to literature as a caeer.In 1880,he married Fanny Osbourne,a divorced american woman,whom he had followed to California.They returend to Scotland,but soom left agains on a series of journeys necessitated by Stevenson's poor health.Treasure Island was written in the summer of 1881 and marked the beginning of Stevenson's popularity and his career as a profitable writer.A Child's Garden of Verses appeared in 1885,followed in 1886 by two of his best-known works:Kidnapped,an adventure tale noted for its Scottish setting ,and The Strange Case of Dr.jekyll and Mr.Hyde,a science-fiction thriller with moral overtones.Stevenson died in 1894 on the small samoan island in the Pacific where he had gone in search of better health. |
