内容简介

Few things can capture the danger and desperation of men at sea as dramatically as whaling. Eric Jay Dolin begins with Captain John Smith's expedition to the New World in 1614. He chronicles the rise of a burgeoning industry, to its golden age when a fleet of more than 700 ships hunted the seas and its decline as the twentieth century dawned. This sweeping social and economic history provides rich accounts of the whalers and contains a wealth of detail on whales.

作者简介

Dolin's professional career includes jobs as a fisheries policy analyst at the National Marine Fisheries Service, a program manager at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an environmental consultant stateside and in London, an American Association for the Advancement of Science writing fellow at Business Week, a curatorial assistant in the Mollusk Department at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology, and an intern at the National Wildlife Federation, the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management, and the U.S. Senate. In addition to books, Dolin has written more than 60 articles for magazines, newspapers, and professional journals.
