| With its dynamic forms and vibrant colours, the work of the Memphis group transcended all the rules of functionalism and perceived 'good taste' in design. From their first exhibition in 1981 to when they broke up in 1988, the young designers and architects of Memphis, with Italian design legend Ettore Sottsass as their leader, produced a range of furniture and other objects - lamps, ceramics, clocks, fabrics and glassware - that demonstrated a breathtaking scope of expression that has not been seen since. |
