When first prepared for the printer this bibliography did not inolncte the material pertaining to the Cherokee language, it being cousidcretl an open qi estionw hether that language belongecl to the Iroqnoi st o cl r. At the request of the Director special attention was given to the subject by a number of the members of the Bureau, ancl n comparative vocabulary was prepared. The examination of this led the Director to adopt the conclusion that the language does belong to the Iroqi oian stock, aud its literature has accordingly been incorporated herein. The aim has been to include in this catalogue everything, priutecl or in manuscript, relating to the subject-books, pa8mphlets, articles in magazines, tracts, serials, etc., and such reviews and annonncernentu of publications as seemecl worthy of notice. The dictiouary plan has been followed to its extreme lirnil, the subject and tribal indexes, references to libraries, etc., being included in ono alphabetic series. The priluary arrangement is alphabetic by authors, translators of works into tlie native languages being treated as authors. Under each author the arrangement is, first, by printed works, and second, by manuscripts, each group being given chronologically, allcl inthe case of printed books each morlc is follomerl through its various editions before the next iu chronologic order is taken up. Anonymous printed worlrs are entered under the name of the uthor when known and uncler the first word of the title, not an article or p1. cposition, when not kno rn.
