Born in the year of the Tiger, Chris's first expedition in life ended in failure when he tried to dig from Pennsylvania to China at the age of six. Hardened by reality but still infinitely curious about the other side of the world, he went on to study Chinese literature in Colorado, Kunming and Tainan, thus preparing for a bright future in toothbrush sales to a billion eager consumers. Unfortunately, a debilitating interest in books thwarted his business sense, and he soon found himself working as an editor in Berkeley in between trips to Asia instead of pursuing more esoteric marketing classes. Plans to exploit the world's greatest market took a further blow when a chance encounter in a Taiwanese elevator led to love, and then a surprise move to Paris (or was it the other way around?). Utterly unprepared and without valid working papers, Chris began writing about life in France as a means to buy baguettes. Lo and behold, he soon discovered that you can get paid for writing about things like weird French comic books and filling out paperwork at the police station. This launched a series of contributions to various publications on France, until one day Lonely Planet picked up on his original passion for Asia and agreed to send him packing down the Silk Road for China, and then on to the world?s fastest-changing city for Shanghai. When not on the road, he continues to enjoy life in Paris with his wife, Perrine, and son, Elliot. |
