A Picture's Worth: PECS and Other Visual Communication Strategies in Autism

A PICTURE'S WORTH examines the value of non-verbal communication strategies for children with autism who do not speak or initiate speech. It presents in detail the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) developed by authors Bondy and Frost. PECS allows a child to use pictures to express his needs and desires without prompting from another person. Children who can communicate using PECS and other nonverbal strategies exhibit less frustration and are better able to focus on learning new skills.
