In reviewing the first edition of this book, Bereavement Magazine called it a fantastically complete teaching manual for everyone working/living/loving with grieving children. I would heartily agree. When I review, I don't usually interject personal information. However, the issue of children's grief is close to my heart. As I read this manual, it was clear that support persons in our life needed the very information this book provides. It wasn't available then. School problems, behavior problems, etc. were dealt with reactively and punitively. Many situations might have played out much differently if all of us had really understood the far-reaching responses that children have to grief experience. Life and Loss is a resource guide for professionals with a breadth of information about the many intricacies of loss. As professionals, we often seek a resource to help educate kids, parents or ourselves on appropriate ways to deal with trauma and grief. Life and Loss is what we seek. This reader friendly book gives strategies to recognize different types of childhood losses, understand the many myths related to grief, and identify behaviors associated with grief, practical strategies for use with grieving children and an extensive resource bibliography. It is a resource in which I have passed on parents, teachers and other professionals in the field. Life and Loss is a comprehensive and generalizable resource for working with children in the areas of loss and grief.. Kelly Stinson, Book Reviewer |
