Geraldine Goodkitty: The Tale of a Single Mother Surviving in an Urban Environment

The author experienced a curious dream about a stray cat with the odd name Geraldine Goodkitty and her three kittens. She decided to write about each of the characters in the dream in order to probe its meaning. Geraldine's story began to expand, and the author continued to write. The story grew into a composite inspired by the wonderful animals that have graced her life and lent their names, personalities, and physical appearance to most of the characters in the novel. Geraldine's tale is told primarily from a feline perspective. However, the animal and human stories interweave at various points and eventually converge.

The author examines Geraldine's hardships as an urban stray, her loves, her total commitment to her kittens, her social interaction with other members of the feline community, and her interaction with humans. She seeks refuge in a woman's backyard, and her presence sparks a conflict between the woman and her neighbor. In the end, Geraldine, the woman, and her neighbor discover that it is the capacity to love that creates an atmosphere in which lives can change and miracles can happen.
