COVER STORY The Olympics might occupy pride of place in the public psyche at the moment, but unknown to the vast majority, the government has drawn up a plan that stretches well beyond the Games-a plan that will transform Beijing into one of the most habitable cities on the planet. The nwe 27.66-km subway line is the mere tip of the iceberg. More subway arteries have been planned for 2008; billions are being spent on nwe transport hardware; bus and subway fares have plunged. Although pollution levels remain alarmingly high and housing price is an incremental source of worry, the authorities are seeking to capitalize on the capital;s natural energy and determination, its cultural richness and economic flowering. The 21st Century, if all goes to plan, will see Beijing transfiguring into the glittering, multi-faceted jewel in China's crown.
