| Shanxi, one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization, has been reputed as "Theme Park of Chinese Civilization" and "Museum of Ancient Oriental Art" It abounds with historical and cultural heritages of various kinds. Up to present, there are altogether over 35,000 immovable ones already discovered, 119 of which have been listed as key cultural relic units under national protection. It ranks first nationwide in this respect. The 20th century saw a great number of achievements in archeological field work in Shanxi.
