| Charter 77, a Czechoslovak citizens initiative working for the observanceof human rights, came into being on 1st January 1977 which means it will beten years old in 1987. It has not been an especially easy decade: from the out-set, Charter 77 has had to cope with much hardship, from persecution of everykind by the state authorities, to its own internal problems engendered by theconstant need to seek a concensus among people with the most varied opin-ions and personalities. The fact that, in spite of these difficulties, Charter 77ist not only alive and active but is actually ever more clearly winning wide-spread respect, is certainly cause for rejoicing. We would not wish to treat this anniversary solely as a time for rejoicing, however. Above all, it challenges us to think about the Charter s future andhow to improve its work, how to involve more citizens in its activity, and lastbut not least, how to rejuvenate the Charter community. But in order to do so we need, among other things, to make an objectivesurvey of these past ten years. One of the possible ways of providing such asurvey is the present collection. We are confident that it will help people inCzechoslovakia and abroad who are interested in Charter 77 to get a betteridea of its activity, its mission and its problems. We wish to thank everyone who helped in the preparation of this book. |
