INTRODUCTION ardly a day goes by when we don t hear about a study telling us how a certain diet, exercise program, or lifestyle will help us live longer and healthier lives. Clearly, ff we do the \"right things\" we have more power over our health than was previously thought. But where do we start? At the UCLA School of Public Health, our goals are disease preven- tion and health promotion. We conduct research on everything from AIDS, cancer, and aging to air pollution, health-care access, and the special problems of groups such as mothers, children, and minorities. But research is only half our job. The other half is education that leads to a healthier society, and that is why we wrote this book. You will find no startling revelations in the pages ahead, no contro- versial assertions. What is new is that, for the first time, all of this in- formation and advice is together in one resource--presented in the same readable fashion that EarthWorks Press popularized in the best- seller 50 Simp/e Th/n~ You Can Do to Save the Earth. No matter how easy this information is to follow, it is of little value unless it is used. 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save Your Life is an ac- tion manual. We present this book with the hope that you will not only learn something and use it for future reference, but also that you will be spurred to make the lifestyle changes that will improve your health and the health of those around you. The health of those around your Absolutely. Whether you re working to clean up the environment, to stop the spread of AIDS, or to reduce stress levels around you, your actions make a difference not only for your health, but for your community s. That s what public health--and this book--are all about. Special credit for this project must go to Dr. Michael Goldstein, who helped conceptualize it and coordinated the efforts of the faculty; and John Javna, Michael Lynberg, and Lynn Kebow. Without these four individuals, the book would not exist. Hem s to your good health. ---Abdelmonem A. A~, Ph.D. Dean, UCLA School of Public Health
