| Ian Daley lives with his father， mother， and older brother on a dairy farm in upstate Vermont， the "north country." Times are hard for small farmers in the region. They get even harder when a winter ice storm brings down the power lines， and stray voltage gets loose on the farm， randomly shocking humans and animals and disrupting the cows’ milking. Ian’s dad， who has always been gruff and noncommunicative， becomes morose. His mom becomes increasingly worn out， and finally one day， she goes away. Ian doesn’t know where she has gone or for how long. After her departure， Ian’s father gets even worse， his brother checks out， and Ian grows more and more lonely. As he grapples with his mother’s decision to give up on what she considers a lost cause， Ian comes to discover his love of farm life in spite of its isolation and harshness. |
