P R E F A C E . )~~i~i~\".
I literally wrote this book to save your skin. You see, I know the
one secret that can keep your skin amazingly youthful even if
you are chronically stressed, have a miserable diet, and never
use an ounce of moisturizer. While enabling you eventually to
look decades younger than your contemporaries, this secret
will also allow you to prevent almost all skin cancers. Too good
to be true? Not at all! In fact, in addition to giving the scien-
tific evidence supporting this secret, I show how you can prove
it to yourself.
So what s the secret? It is simply that sunlight causes over
90 percent of the visible aging changes that occur within skin.
You might have already heard that overexposure to sunlight
causes premature aging of the skin, but this statement differs in
two very important ways from what I am saying. First, this state-
ment gives the impression that your skin is destined to look old
and that protecting it from sunlight will only keep this from
happening prematurely. I m saying that skin looks old because
of sunlight exposure and that protecting your skin from sun-
light can keep it from ever looking old. Second, this statement
gives the impression that only overexposure to sunlight causes
aging of the skin. I m saying that any exposure to sunlight
causes aging of the skin; small exposure (such as taking a short
walk on a sunny winter day) causes a small amount of aging, and
large exposure (such as spending a summer day on the beach)
causes a large amount of aging. The cumulative effect of all
exposure to sunlight throughout your life is the primary deter-
minant of how old your skin looks. Sunlight exposure is almost
synonymous with the visible aging of your skin.
Most of us have grown up worshipping the sun. It has
warmed us, brightened our days, and provided us with the
deep tans we associate with both health and happiness. If you
really want to protect your skin, you are going to have to
modify some of your attitudes toward sunlight.
But before you consider spendin~
indoors, let me tell you that you can pro
enjoy the sun. To do this, however, you n
