Novel by Jules Verne, published in 1864 in French as Voyage au centre de la Terre. It is the second book in his popular science-fiction series Voyages extraordinaires (1863-1910). Otto Lidenbrock, an impetuous German professor of geology, discovers an encoded manuscript in which a 16th-century explorer claims to have found a passageway to the center of the Earth. Otto impulsively prepares a subterranean expedition, enlisting his young nephew Axel and a stoic Icelandic guide, Hans Bjelke. After descending into an extinct volcano in Iceland, the men spend several months in a underground world of luminous rocks, antediluvian forests, and fantastic sea creatures until they ride a volcanic eruption out of Stromboli Island, off the coast of Italy. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

'this edition of what symbolically and psychoanalytically must be his richest text will, however, do much to encourage a more just apprectiation. William Butcher's new translation is effective and enjoyable, The end-notes are extremely useful ... Valuable avenues of analysis are suggested with brisk confidence,' The Modern Language Review

Book Description
The Wordsworth Classics covers a huge list of beloved works of literature in English and translations. This growing series is rigorously updated, with scholarly introductions and notes added to new titles.

Jules Verne's third science fiction novel describes the discovery and exploration of a secret tunnel which leads through a volcano to the centre of the Earth. The leader of the expedition, together with his ward and joined by his nephew and an Icelandic guide commence the journey.

From AudioFile
The wonderfully crisp, steadily-paced British enunciation of reader Philpott, combined with an excellent abridgment and well-chosen musical interludes of classical music, make this production outstanding. The music is appropriately eerie and somber, with flashes of excitement. Naxos has outdone itself. D.W.
