| In August 2002 the floodwaters of the River Elbe in Dresden, Germany, rushed into the vaults of the Zwinger, home of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, which houses one of the world's finest collections of old master paintings. Some 4,000 artworks were carried to safety by museum staff, the armed forces, and scores of volunteers. This volume celebrates the reopening of the museum by showcasing 57 of these saved masterpieces, by artists such as Mantegna, Titian, Poussin, Watteau, Dürer, Cranach, Velázquez, and Murillo. Each work is handsomely illustrated in full color and accompanied by a scholarly entry. Harald Marx's fine essay traces the history of the collection as well as that of one of Europe's most spectacular architectural capitals, whose full Baroque splendor can be savored in Bernardo Bellotto's stunning 18th-century panoramas. |
