INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Reaso~z. RatioHality and Reasot lableness is intended as a critical reflection on the nature of reason. It auns to show lhat. reason, understood primarily as the principle of life (logosL is degraded into rationality, a kind of instrumel~tal reason (tlorkh- elmer and Adorno) or purposive reason (Weber) used in ,aatu:-:tl science. Thus, it loses its original ontological dimension. ~his monograph also aims to show that rationality and reason a,~ different lbrms which represent different aspects of human life and which are mainly built on human technical and emancipaiory interests. However, they are fhr from complete because they present at best some kinds of principles, or laws which are c,:>~-- slructed on some aspects of the Weltatlschauunget~. lr~_ ordeJ\" ~<:, understand the causes of the crisis of rationality as well :is tc~ find out a possible solution, we wish to return to the concept ,~>i~ reasonableness neglected by both rationalists and empirici~t~:. Of course, we make no claim that reasonableness can cure :til ,nahdies once and for all. Such a claim would be both ridicuioue~ and unscientific. Our point, defended in this monograph is, that reasonableness along with reason and rationality represents a certain form of human life which must be taken into account. If reason is the principle of our ultimate concern arm if rationality is the instrumental, purposive principle in natural science, then reasonableness can serve to be the principle of human practical life which embraces different fomls of human life such as mora- lity, laws, arts etc.
