| Volcano Watching started as aseries of weekly newspapercolumns which were printed inthe Hawaii Tribune Herald. Oneof our aims was to provide forlocal readers and visitors alike aglimpse into the mysterious, andoften violent, inner workings ofthe volcanoes that have shapedthese Hawaiian Islands. We alsohoped to shed some light on themuch less violent, but almost asmysterious, inner workings of avolcano observatory and thetechniques that are used todecipher the clues that thevolcanoes send us.Robert Decker was Professor ofGeophysics at Dartmouth Collegeuntil 1979, and has since beenappointed Scientist in Chargeof the U.S. Geological Survey sHawaiian Volcano Observatory.Barbara Decker is a freelancewriter, and Rick Hazlett is ageologist and illustrator. |
