One could argue that EMS actually began in biblical times when the Good Samaritan stopped to render aid. However, hundreds of years would then pass before the National Acad- emy of Sciences published the White Paper in an attempt to formalize the process of rendering care to trauma victims. It laid out a plan to bring together the resources necessary to create a system to save lives'. It could also be said that with that landmark document came the first attempt to define EMS from a scientific perspective. With that effort to describe the science of EMS, it was only a matter of time until someone took the time to describe the other side of the coin: the art of EMS. The year was 1985, and that someone was Kate Dernocoeur. The book she wrote bore the name of Streetsense. It wasfilled with ideas, suggestions, pearls of wisdom, and lessons from theschool of hard knocks. It filled the massive gaps left by textbooks, whosefocus was on the transmission of medical knowledge and the teachingof skills. Streetsense talked about how to do a better job of taking careof people, and taking care of yourself, too. With this anniversary of the White Paper comes the Third Edition ofStreetsense. It is appropriate that these two publications should share ananniversary. As the brief history of EMS has evolved, we have increas-ingly realized that the fusing of both the art and the science of EMS wasnecessary, not only for EMS to survive, but more importantly, for EMSto flourish. As with the first two editions of Streetsense, the Third Edition is aliving, dynamic document. It is a book to be read, and put away, andthen read again. The timeless nature of Streetsense makes it at once abook for the novice EMS provider as well as for the seasoned veteran.
