Frustrated and angry, Hera turned against Echo. Thegoddess condemned her always to have the last word -- butrobbed her of the ability to initiate conversatton. She wouldnever again be able to speak except to repeat what was saidto her. This speech impediment was hardest to bear when Echo, like all the maidens before her. fell in love with Narcissus. a young man of great beauty.
