But it is ahvavs this vision, however modified, that controls the quality of and participation in human life. This insight has made a great contribution not only to my life but also to nay reflections on the human condition. I had come, in my own way, to the realization that love is the essential ingredient in a program of full hmnan living and that love works if people are willing to work at it. I had come to see that communica- tion is the lifeblood of love and that the expe- rience and expression of emotions is the es- sential \"stuff\" of communication. I had also come to realize that no one can cause emotions in another but can only stimulate emotions that are already there waiting to be aroused. After moving through these insights like milestones of understanding into ever new and exciting territory, I was left with a lingering question. Supposing a person were to act on all these insights, feeling perfectly flee to ex- perience and in a mature way to express his loneliness, fear, anger, and so forth. Where ~oes the person go from here? Will the simple md open expression of these negative and mrdensome emotions be sufficiently healing o change the patterns of his or her reactions? i ritz Perls and Gestalt therapists suggest that
