A Word About the Supernatural This is a book about the outright supernatural. And, I, for one, am ready for it. When my wife, Elizabeth, and I co-authored some of the early books of the Renewal Movement (The Cross and the Switchblade, God s Smuggler, The Hiding Place), we in- duded accounts of mystery and miracle, not because they were sensational but because without them, the events we were reporting could not have happened. For the past decade the emphasis in American publishing has shifted somewhat, toward the believer s need for personal com- mitment and discipline. But the pendulum is swingingback again, as it always must, between the twin truths of God s initiative and our responsibility. This book by Loren Cunningham is full of startling evidences of God s sovereign activity in our lives today. So inexplicable, in fact, in human terms, were Loren s experiences, that he and his co-author, Janice Rogers, and I made a decision. We went through the manuscript, eliminating instances of miraculous guid- ance that could not be verified by \"two or three witnesses\" (the Bible s own standard for accuracy). I include myself in this decision, because I acted as editorial consultant on the project, living for weeks at a time on one of the 113 worldwide Youth With A Mission (YWAM) bases, overseeing the writing of the book. It was a new experiment in teaching-by-doing, and out of it I feel has come a fine new author, Loren s sister, Janice Rogers. She has done a sensitive job in blending a good narrative with solid teaching on a subiect of central im- portance to every Christian, \"How can I learn to recog- nize the voice of God?\" One problem the three of us never did solve. There ~, ere so many superb stories, many of them old YWAM
