and what kind of work you are looking for, and what method of job-hunting you use. In any event, if you lose your job in 1988 you will find that it does not matter whether you are the only one in your neighborhood that is out of a job, or everyone is. It s still \"the pits.\" You still feel the loneliness of the experience. The loss of your job is like a death in the family: it colors the whole way you look at the world. Particularly if it was a sudden loss. You can t understand how the rest of the world can go on with its business as usual, when you are in such deep mournifig--and indignation--over what has happened to you. I remember well how I felt the last time I was fired. Intellec- tually you know that the majority of the world doesn t even know you exist; but emotionally, we are all back in the Dark Ages. When we are in pain, we can t understand why the whole world doesn t stop spinning--out of sympathy for our plight. If you are job-hunting or contemplating a career-change, this book is designed to give you practical hope. Not merely a pep-talk to bolster you up, but some practical steps. And so, tiffs book has both some quick steps you can take--learned from studying successful job-hunters--and also a more sys- tematic approach to the job-hunt: through dealing with the crucial questions of WHAT, WHERE and HOW. As many of you know, this book is revised each year-- substantially. So, for those who have seen an earlier edition-- even last year s edition--I would like to say what is new this year. The most obvious thing is that there is a new Appendix C this year on the subject of \"The Brain and Job-Hunting,\" which may be of interest to many of you, and especially to those of you who feel you are handicapped. There is also a new Appendix D on \"Religion and Job-Hunting: How to Find Your Mission in Life,\" for those of you who believe in God and want to know how to relate this faith to your job-hunt. I am regularly using the Appendices for articles of special interest to some of my readers, though I do have to change them year by year for new articles. Thus, \"Women and the World of Work\" appeared only in the 1986 edition, while two articles I am presently working on, \"Personal Computers and Job-Hunting\" and ~]ob-Hunting and the Handicapped,\" will appear in next year s edition.
