Foreword
Welcome to the 33rd annual edition of the Guide. The book is sponsored by the
L~Salle Banks and published by Scholt Communications Incorporated Originally
Fblished in 1965 by A.G Becker & Co. Incorporated， the book was acquired in
1~84 by Scholl Communications Incorporated. First Chicago Corporation and ts
successor sponsored the Guide from 1984 to 1997， and we are pleased to welcome
~e LaSalle Banks as the new sponsor. Editorial management has remained
unchanged throughout the book s history.
The new edition provides information on 296 publicly held corporations headquar-
lered in Ininois， as well as information on 24 of the state s largest banks and savings
~iitutions. These organizations were selected principally on the basis of their total
revenues and total assets， and the information is intended to be of general interest.
Directory-Organization
Companies are listed in alphabetical order， with a separate listing for banks and
savings institutions beginning on page 299. Beginning on page 325 is a listing of
companies indexed according to Standard Industdal Classification (S.I.C.) business
code numbers prepared by the Office of Management and Budget of the Executive
Office of the President. The S.I.C. codes listed in this edition are based on the latest
version of the revised classification manual.
An ordinal ranking of industdal， retail， transportation， utility， and diversified financial
companies by revenues and total assets begins on page 341. Bank and savings
institution holding companies are ranked separately， as are commercial banks and
savings institutions. For comparative purposes， these lists include rankings from the
1996-97 edition.
Changes from Prior Year
Alist of company changes from last year s edition begins on page 349. It includes
companies whose names have changes during the year， as well as a summary of
companies that have been added to and deleted from the book.
Sources of Information
The information contained in this book was obtained principally from the companies
included， and from annual reports， proxy statements， prospectuses， and IO-Ks.
Unless otherwise indicated， earnings per share are reported on a pdmary basis.
While this information has been collected from sources believed to be reliable， and
due care and caution have been exercised in prepadng and producing this book， its
