A rather astonishing number of people buy each new edih，，~
of Otis book， so I must first say hello to those returning readev~
\"Hi， there.\"
No doubt you want to know what is different about Parachute
this yem， as compared to last. Well， the most changes arc in
Appendices B and C. Lots of new entries， there， since the num-
ber of new books in this field， or new career counselors， seems
Io increase geometrically: you know， 2， 4， 16， 256， and--like that.
every year
What else? Well， there s a map of sorts at the beginning of
each chapter so that new readers will get a quick overview of
exactly what the chapter is going to guide them through， and
what they need to do next， in their job-hunt.
My primary agonizing this year， as is the case every year， con-
cerned the size of this book. It s far larger than I want it to be.
It s supposed to be a survival manual， not an encyclopedia (or a
door stop). True， the body of the book--the stuff you need to
read--is less than 200 pages. But the back of the book--thepink
page.s， as we now call them， the optional stuff not needed by
every reader， the Appendices--has grown like Topsy over the
past twenty years.
I ve set about to cut that part of the book as much as I can，
this edition and last. I feel we have to leave in the Workbook
(Appendix A)， the book list (Appendix B)， and the list of coun-
selors (Appendix C). Also we have to leave in the section about
finding your mission in life， since--year after year--that section
generates more mail (all favorable) than anything else in the
book. Many readers tell me they feel it is the most important
part of the book， to them. This year I turned it into an Epilogue，
and it will remain in this book， as long as it is ever published.
But this year， or last， I took out all the rest of the stuff ti om
the back of the book， the pink pages. This year I removed the
Appendix dealing with job-hunting lbr those with disabilities，
not because it isn t important. It is. But there just isn t room fi)r
us u~ publish it every year. That s the bad news. The good news
is that we received a number ofrequesLs to publish that section
as a separate booklet， anyway， so that is what we have done.
