INTRODUCTION The Truth About The Trimbles Over a quarter-century ago (doesn t that sound historical?( 1 joined the ranks of science fiction fandom. Activities in this loosely organized collection of enthusiasts were and are only as strenuous as each individual chooses. I wrote for fanzines, as well as drew cartoons and serious art for those worthy amateur publications, I attended science fiction conventions and became a member of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society. I designed and wore futuristic and fantasy costumes (and won my share of prizes, too}. In a word, albeit a coined word, 1 was a science fiction \"actifan.\" During my activity as a science fiction fan, I attended [as do all fans in the Los Angeles area] a party hosted by Forrest ]. Ackerman. editor of Famous Monsters of Fdmlond magazine. There the fates decreed, some twenty-three years ago, that [ohn Griffin Trimble and one Betty McCarthy should cross paths. A year later we were married and continued in our active \"fanning.\" Neither of us did anything which sold professionally in the science fiction field, but we became Very Well Known in inter- national random. About that time, 1 became \"Bjo\"--(Bee-|o). By 1966, we were a pair of \"actifans\" with one child and another soon to be on the way, when we saw Star Trek on television, lohn and I decided it was worth our attention. We continued to watch this science fictional TV series each week, growing more involved with the characterization and (for those years( very good SF production values. Both of us hoped that by encouraging a long life for Star Trek, it would show other producers that there was a need for Rood science fiction on television. 1
