When a play is being performed on the stage, it is not only the actors who are working, although they may be the only ones seen and heard by the audience. Behind the scenes, somewhere, is a team of people or a stage crew as it is called, that has helped to get the play ready for its performance, and that does all the necessary practical tasks when the play is eventually being per- formed. These practical tasks will probably include the building and putting up of scenery, the making and use of props, sound and lighting effects, and sometimes even the cleaning of the stage! The importance of good stagecraft is that it helps the actor to give a more convincing performance, thereby increas- ing the enjoyment of the audience. Backstage work must always be in keeping with the mood and atmosphere of the play being performed, and should be carried out as accurately and as thoroughly as possible, bearing in mind how it will all seem from the audience s point of view. Poor stagecraft, shoddily done, can break the atmosphere of a play and ruin a good performance, but if care and thought have been used, it can be very exciting to be in a team which has contributed to a success- ful production.
