PREFACE For several years I have been writing one-minute radio spots. Often people have said, \"Why don t you publish them?\" I have always backed away because these spots were written with specific goals in view, such as reading the Bible, attending worship, or es- tablishing a Christian home. And since they were written for radio, I didn t think they would hang together and make a book. But it occurred to me that this approach could become a highly interesting and novel way of under- standing a book in the Bible. So I applied myself to writing simple, short chapters on Paul s Letter to the Romans. This book is the result. It s original, since it was not written for radio. Obviously Day Brighteners cannot be an ex- haustive study of Romans, nor does it attempt to deal with some of the deeper issues raised by the text. But it serves as an introduction to the teaching of this eru cial epistle. It will take you into the heart of Christianity, for Paul s Letter to Rome is really good news. The text used is the translation by J. B. Phillips, which I find to be the most exciting and helpful. You may read it as any other book or as a daily devotional guide. You will note a unique manner of paragraphing to make each reading crisp and clear.
