| fORTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Roger comes to a Montreal psychiatric outpatient clinic, saying that his family thinks he needs help. He does not haveany specific complaints, but acknowledges that because of "perfection-ism and immobility," he has been unable to work for about seven years. Roger was reared in a professional family in a small city in BritishColumbia. He had "a happy childhood" and did well in school. However, his wife (whom he met in Grade 6) claims he was "methodical and slow"even in his teens. He graduated from the university, but was a semesterlate because he was unable to complete written assignments on time. Roger worked for a small company in an administrative capacity forfour years, then left to join a medium-sized real estate developmentcompany. Initially he did well; but as time went on, he found it increas-ingly difficult to get to work on time, primarily because, while gettingdressed, articles of clothing had to be arranged in a special way before hecould put them on. He began to miss deadlines for reports. He had nodifficulty starting the reports, but often was unable to complete thembecause he wanted them to be "perfect." In addition, he had difficultykeeping up with opening the mail at home and paying bills. He was awarethat they had to be paid, but he somehow could not get around to doingit. |
