From the small acorn of a single A&W Roo~Beer Franchise--hardly the invention of electricity or ,the ~ersonal computer--has grown the mighty oak of :oday s Marriott. Like all enduring great companies, Marriott s lasting uccess does not come from a single great idea, bril- iant strategy, lucky break, or even a single great .~ader. Each of these advantages--even if a company as themldoes not last forever. No, the foundations f a great company lie in more fundamental attributes. Ls Jerry Porras and I wrote in our book Built to Last: uccessful Habits of Visionary Companies, the culmi- ation of our six-year study into what makes enduring :eat companies, Marriott attained its stature because shares in common certain timeless fundamentals ,und in such companies as Procter & Gamble, ewlett-Packard, 3M, and Nordstrom. Timeless core values and enduring purpose. great companies maintain a set of core values and a core purpose that remain fixed while their busi- ness strategies and practices continually adapt to a changing world. They understand the difference between what should never change and what should be open for change, between what is truly sacred and what is not. As with all great companies, Marriott s core val- X FOREWORD ues did not come from intellectualizing with b ness school professors, following fads, or listen to the rantings of management gurus. Marric core values can be traced back over seventy ye to the personal core values of J. Willard Marri, who wove them into the fabric of the comp~ and then passed them along to his son i Marriott, Jr. There can be no distinction betwee company s core values and the core values of leadership. The values originate from deep ins the people themselves--authentic, bone deep, p sionately held. Marriott s core values--includi the belief that people are number one (\"Take ca of Marriott people and they will take care Marriott guests\"), a commitment to continuc improvement and overcoming adversity, and good old-fashioned dedication to hard work a having fun while doing it--provide a foundati, of stability and enduring character. Similarly, the company s core purpose--to ma people away from home feel that they are amo~ friends and are really wanted--serves as a fix, point of guidance and inspiration.
