| This fifth edition of A Pride of Poets covers the years 1981, 1982,1983 of the New York City High School Poetry Contest. It containsthe poems of the prize winners and finalists for these three yearsand the names and schools of all the contestants. The contestitself, begun in 1971 and modeled after an earlier contest, requiresthat each high school submit the work of only one student poet. The list of students is, therefore, a list of poets considered best ineach school. Each yearan eminent poet speaks at the Awards Ceremony, held atWashington Irving High School the first Tuesday in May.
