| In the Christian churches today, rev-olutionaries have seized the moral initi-ative. Where once the churches were aforce for stability and against revolu-tion, they are now on the defensive, indisarray. For the first time, a rankingChristian thinker weighs the advocatesof revolution--and especially, looks attheir claim to moral superiority in thelight of traditional Christian morality. John Eppstein focuses on his ownRoman Catholic Church. He allows em-inent Catholic apologists for revolutionlike Bishop Camara and Abbe Comblinto state their case. Then he picks itapart, drawing on Scripture, papalteaching and Catholic writers throughthe ages. Mr. Eppstein refuses to dodge the dif-ficulties in his position, notably somerecent papal statements that have en-couraged Marxist as well as Catholicrevolutionaries. How can these papalutterances be reconciled with traditionalCatholic teaching? Mr. Eppstein s ana-lysis is sophisticated, his observationsbalanced and assured. After this book, revolutionaries in theCatholic Church can no longer assumethat the tides of history will flow theirway. |
