| THE PATRIOTIC HYMN "America" is almost our secondnational anthem. With countless others I share the loveit expresses for "thy woods and templed hills"; the high-lands draw me back again and again. I have seen the firstlight of morning touch the top of Maine s Mount Katahdin, and watched the sun slip into the Pacific as I stood on MountTamalpais just north of the Golden Gate. Most spectacular ofall was the midnight sun grazing the northern horizon, viewed from the hard-gained heights of Mount McKinley. The wooded slopes of our eastern "templed hills"change with every season. Which is more dramatic, the exu-berant late-spring bloom of the Smokies or the rich tapestryof autumn on the New England hills? Throughout the yearthe roads and trails of these venerable, peaceful ranges of theEast attract the crowd-weary residents of nearby cities. |
