at Adoption
Today
- Congratulations! As a
prospective adoptive
parent you are about to
embark on a remark
~ able journey. This ex-
~ perience will be com-
pletely unique because
each adoption, no mat-
ter how much it tries
your patience, brings another story to your family history.
This book has been written specifically to help you begin the
adoption process. Many people are very hopeful when they begin that
process but soon become frustrated by the system and eventually give
up when they are unable to make a connection that would lead them
to a child. An adoptive mother, Marissa, from Genoa, Ohio, explains
the attitude you must take to successfully cope with the system:
\"Whatever you do, do not give up. It is frustrating trying to adopt,
but it is possible. You have to work at adopting like you work at a job.
It is hard work, but persistence pays off.\"
We will begin with infant adoptions in the United States because
most first-time adopters are initially interested in this type of adop-

or have friends or relatives who have adopted internationally; there-

special education teacher or a therapist, you might feel capable of par-
enting a challenged child, or if someone in your family has a physical
or mental disability, perhaps you will feel comfortable adopting a
child with a similar condition. Whatever the reasons, we each begin
our adoption search by looking for the type of child we think we
would feel comfortable with. Often the degree of comfort changes as
we learn more about adoption, but I encourage you to always explore
your \"first choice\" initially.
Many people adopt the child of their dreams. Why not you? It s
frustrating to hear about those who decide to adopt and have a child
before you know it. How did they adopt so quickly? Were they just
plai~ lucky? Did they. have an \"in\" somewhere? For a few, the an-
~, r ~ I ~ ~h~,bh ~, but for most this is not the case. So why do
