Introduction II II Good Health Is Ageless In 1513, the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon set sail with three ships in search of the mythical Fountain of Youth. A drink from this fabulous fountain, legend had it, would instantly make an old person young. Ponce de Leon failed, of course, but his quest for eternal youth lives on. In fact, scientists now believe they ve found what he was looking for--not in old stories but in hard, scientific fact. There is increasing evidence that what today we might call future youth--measured in zest, mental energy and exuberant good health---can be achieved no matter what your chronological age. And you don t need to sail the globe to find it. The fountain-- or font, if you will--is right here: the 1994 edition of The Natural Healing and Nutrition Annual. In the last 12 months, we talked to scores of Amer- ica s top scientists--cardiologists, rheumatologists, nutritionists and more--and asked them what we should be doing to look, feel and act as young as possible. One study, for example, found that vitamin E--which is found in large amounts in green leafy vegetables--can reduce the risk for cataracts and heart disease. In another study, people with high blood pressure were given a high-potassium diet. As a result, more than a third were able te stop taking their medication. How s that for turning back the clock? And while we re on the subject of blood pressure, another study found that people who lowered theirs had better sex than those stuck with higher xUi numbers. Now that s a \"side efl~ct\" we can live with! m--- Our quest didn t stop there. We also discovered that
