FOREWORD
ON THE CONTINENT OF AFglCA today approximately
twenty million people speak Kiswahili， popularly
known as Swahili. Spoken in the Eastern， Central，
and Southern regions of the continent， it is rapidly
expanding to the West and to the North.
This book will not help you to speak fluent Swahili，
but the student or traveler will find it a practical
guide to simple communication in the language. The
pronunciation key is written in easily understood
phonetic syllables to help the English speaker ap-
proximate the correct Swahili sound and diction.
Carefully selected English phrases most needed by
visitors are given first， followed by the Swahili trans-
lations， with the phonetic key placed immediately
after for quick， accurate pronunciation. The syllable
which bears the stress or accent of the word is
italicized.
Don t be timid. Use these phrases freely. They will
serve your needs and make friends for you too， as you
travel on the bright continent.
