| The AHA offers a variety of courseson basic life support (BLS) andcardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) for healthcare providers. With theknowledge and skills you learn in thesecourses, you can save the life of a familymember, a friend, a coworkcr, a citizen inyour community, or a patient in the hos-pital or clinic where you work.The BLS for Healthcare ProvidersCourse is intended for participants whomust have a credential (a card) docu-menting succcssful completion of acourse in CPR and BLS for healthcareprofessionals. Such credentials are typicallyrequired for people who provide health-care to patients in a wide variety of set-tings, both in-hospital and outside thehospital.This coursc will teach you how to rec-ognize and respond to life-threateningemergencies such as cardiac arrest, res-piratory arrest, and foreign-body airwayobstruction (choking). You will learnto recognizc heart attack and stroke inadults and breathing difficulty in chil-dren. This course teaches the skills need-ed to respond to the emergencies youidentify. You will learn the skills of CPRfor victims of all ages (including ventila-tion with barrier devices and bag-maskdevices), use of an automated externaldefibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction.
